The Aquis Gold Coast Titans today confirmed that two ‘home’ matches will be taken to regional areas of Queensland next season due to Cbus Super Stadium unavailability during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
The Titans and the NRL have worked closely with the State Government to ensure Titans games remain in Queensland, with the cities of Toowoomba and Gladstone each hosting a match during the Commonwealth Games period.
“Minister Kate Jones and Tourism and Events Queensland are to be complimented for minimising the impact on the Titans regular season, whilst ensuring the club is not commercially disadvantaged as a result of the unavoidable relocation during a period when the eyes of the sporting world will be on the Gold Coast,” CEO Graham Annesley said.
“Whilst we would have obviously preferred to played all of our home games at Cbus in front of our loyal members and fans, we see this as a great opportunity to grow our brand and club’s footprint across Queensland.
“As the 2018 season draw has not yet been released, we still don’t know the exact rounds or opponent for each match, but the matches will fall somewhere between rounds two and six”.
Tourism and Major Events Minister Kate Jones said she was delighted the Titans would play NRL premiership games in Gladstone and Toowoomba.
“The people of Gladstone and Toowoomba are NRL tragics and I’m sure they will turn out in their thousands to watch the Titans play for premiership points,” Jones said.
“It’s a real coup for both Gladstone and Toowoomba to secure these games in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland and I can’t wait for the Titans to put on a show for the people of regional Queensland.”
NRL CEO Todd Greenberg is also happy that more matches will be taken to regional areas.
“We have said for some time it was our strong desire to take more games to regional venues in 2018, and we’re extremely happy to have been able to do that as part of the new schedule,” Greenberg said.
With two matches to be taken to regional areas, Cbus Super Stadium will still host 10 home games throughout season 2018, allowing members to attend the majority of matches on the Gold Coast.
