Brenko Lee is determined to ensure Sunday's NRL recall isn’t his last in interim coach Craig Hodges starting 13.
A try in the opening minutes of the clash after pouncing on a stray pass from Melbourne hooker Cameron Smith, provided Lee and his Titans team mates with the perfect start to the rRound 18 encounter, however the towering centre knows his place in the top squad isn’t guaranteed.
“I kind of didn’t want to take it for granted this time, obviously the first two rounds, somebody had to get the axe and unfortunately I sat out for quite a while, but that’s footy and I just wanted to bide my time and see what happens to be honest,” Lee said.
“When Hodge told me on Monday that I would be back this weekend and playing my preferred position, I was pinching myself because I didn’t think it was going to happen so soon, I thought it was going to be in the later rounds."
The time spent playing Queensland Cup hasn’t been wasted, Lee has honed his craft, the time away from the NRL also fuelling his top level desire.
“I didn’t want to take it for granted and I just want to take every opportunity I get now”
The 23-year-old has expressed his desire to remain on the Gold Coast with the Titans, but knows only good form and total commitment will secure his future at the Titans and in the NRL.
“It’s not great playing Cup footy when you are coming off contract, but the more games I can string together the more confidence I can get in myself and playing good forty and when you are playing good footy, obviously the clubs come knocking and the Titans want to re-sign you so, that’s the plan, just to string a few good games together and see what happens from there.”
“I am 23 at the moment and I just need to know where I am going to be, and obviously I want to stay at the Titans, but everyone is under review and it’s a success driven industry so who knows what’s going to happen at the end of the year but all I can focus on is me playing good footy and doing my job and hopefully I get another contract.”
