Thompson hitting Maroon patch of form

Corey Thompson has had a phenomenal start to 2021.

The winger has fast become a Titans fan favourite since joining the Club last season, with his energy and effort present every time he pulls on the Gold Coast jersey.

A quiet achiever, Thompson isn't one to talk up his own form - instead always talking about a focus on team success.

Look at his statistics though and you can see why his team-mates love playing with him.

In comparison to other Queensland Origin eligible wingers, Thompson heads almost all of the key stats through the first seven rounds of 2021

Player Club Avg Run Metres Tries Line Breaks Tackle Breaks
Corey Thompson Titans 201 6 9 45
Xavier Coates Broncos 122 6 3 14
Valentine Holmes Cowboys 165 2 5 32
Corey Allen Bulldogs 118 0 0 6
Kyle Feldt Cowboys 119 2 1 8
Dane Gagai Rabbitohs 141 3 3 30
Hymel Hunt Knights 127 2 3 13
Ronaldo Mulitalo Sharks 97 1 2 11

Speaking ahead of the Titans local derby clash with the Broncos in round eight, Titans hooker Erin Clark says Thompson's energy is inspiring his team-mates.

"He's playing the best footy I've ever seen him play," Clark said.

"He plays like he is 22.

"He's not the biggest fella in the team but he runs like he is.

"He gets a lot of ruck speed for us ... I'm happy to see him doing well.

"Thommo is a good bloke ... I think it is just normal to see him running 200+ metres each week."

Thompson will bring up 100 NRL games in round nine against his old side (Wests Tigers), but his form is also good enough to suggest that he wouldn't look out of place in a Maroons jersey.

First though, it's a matchup against current Queensland winger Xavier Coates in the Macca's Local Derby and there is no doubt it'll be team success rather than individual accolades that Thompson will be prioritising.
