Tweed prove too strong for Magpies in postponed game

Souths Logan Magpies previously postponed Round 9 home game against the Tweed Seagulls was set to be an epic match with both team itching to get another win under the belts.

However, Souths Logan's flying start was not enough to prevent the Seagulls from bringing home a win, taking the match at Marsden State High School 42-24.

Ethan Quai-Ward scored in the opening minutes for the Magpies to excite the home crowd and Bradley Frith’s successful conversion set the scores at 6-0.

However, this lead was short-lived as the Seagulls came back just five minutes later to put their first points on the scoreboard, with Lindon McGrady converting his own try to tie the teams up barely 20 minutes into the game.

Joshua Patston then crossed for the visitors to give them the lead, with the teams then going try-for-try for the next period, with Magpies forward Justin Fai pinning the score back.

The teams were locked up at halftime at 12-12, with both sides looking to take out the win.

However, any hopes of a Magpies victory were dashed by an onslaught of tries from Tweed winger Scott Galeano and Patston – who with two tries within five minutes scored a hat-trick in the match.

The Magpies appeared to be able to regain some control over the game as Benaiah Bowie scored, although this was closely followed by multiple errors and a subsequent try from Lee Turner for the Seagulls.

A try from Jordan Pereira in the 73rd minute put the Magpies in good stead, however, Galeano sealed the fate of the game in the dying minutes with his second try for the match.

The Magpies were no match for Tweed’s discipline, not to mention McGrady’s seven from seven successful conversions throughout the game.

Next week, the competition resumes for all teams for Round 13.

The Seagulls will take on the in-form Central Queensland Capras.

The Magpies will host Mackay Cutters.
