Sami 'oh so close' to match-winning try in return for Titans

It was a game of millimetres for Phil Sami in Saturday night's derby clash against the Broncos, having his potential match-winning try heartbreakingly denied due to a 'bobble' spotted by the eagle-eyed Bunker.

Returning from a length stint on the sidelines due to a knee injury, the flyer was sure he had grounded the ball in the 70th minute to put his side ahead, until the dreaded review was called by referee Chris Sutton.

"I like to think it was (a try). I don't really think at the moment that I dropped it until the ref blew his whistle to go upstairs," Sami said.

"But I think that's up to the fans to decide whether it's true or not (that I dropped it), but I think it was a try."

Not hiding the fact having only three wins to the club's name after 19 rounds is a disheartening pill to swallow, the flyer is hoping his side can build momentum after a good showing against Brisbane.

"It is frustrating we've lost seven in a row now, so it would have been nice to get a win (on Saturday)," Sami said.

"In saying that, we did improve a lot since the Newcastle game, but we're still not good enough, so we need to go that step further and try and get the W this week against the Bulldogs.

"We don't want to take another 10 steps back like we have previously. We've always talked about going again and being better, but we haven't really put that into action.

"This is all words at the moment so we have to put into action this Sunday."

And although the Gold Coast are currently sitting 15th at the moment and a wooden spoon is looming, the only ones who are talking about that dreaded kitchen utensil are those external to the group, with not one discussion of coming last happening at Titans HQ.

"You guys (the outside noise) may think that way. We obviously haven't been thinking like that," Sami said.

"We just want to obviously get a win start by this week and move on to the final six weeks.

"We don't really think like that."
