Titans join Deadly Choices in unveiling 2023 health check shirts
The Indigenous playing group of the Gold Coast Titans are placing a spotlight on healthy relationships within and outside extended family groups, to ensure First Nations communities optimise their physical and mental health for themselves and future generations.
During this week's unveiling of the limited-edition Titans and Deadly Choices health check shirt incentives, the importance of the three-way partnership that exists with the Gold Coast’s Kalwun Health Service was highlighted, as a valued means towards improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
As it pertains to healthy relationships, the services provided by Kalwun work to fulfil any potential gaps in people’s lives, by providing professional assistance when the need arises through their three community-controlled health service clinics out of Bilinga, Miami and Coomera, allowing access to culturally appropriate and holistic healthcare for community.
“Healthy relationships I have in my life are probably with my Mum and Dad, my brothers and sisters. I think it’s very important to have people you’re close to as it keeps you in the right headspace and allows you to perform to your best,” confirmed Titans young gun Jayden Campbell.
Similarly, outside back Brian Kelly was joined by one of his mentors today in fellow Grafton product and former Titan, Deadly Choices ambassador Tyrone Roberts.
“Mentors I look up to include my Mum and Dad and of course Tyrone Roberts who lived in the same town as me, so he led the pathways for myself, which I’m truly grateful for. My mentors inspire me to be a better man every day,” added Kelly.
True to the underlying foundations of Deadly Choices, today’s official partnership relaunch also homed in on the priorities of healthy eating, exercise, the avoidance of tobacco and alcohol use, and ensuring individuals continue to complete an annual health check to receive their prized Titans Deadly Choices shirt.
“You can go to dark places if you’re going through a tough time, so having those special people in your life, special relationships close to you, they can really help in those times,” said Titans outside back Treymain Spry.
“I have some very special people close to me, my Mum, Dad and my missus, she’s helped me through some tough times, so having a good healthy relationship with them can help you through a lot.”
The Titans pride themselves on their capacity to make a difference in people’s lives, with club chair Dennis Watt acknowledging what has, and will continue to be a valued relationship with Kalwun and Deadly Choices.
"Our partnership with Deadly Choices is all about improving lives and saving lives and we are proud that rugby league itself in the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers regions has a 100 year association with Indigenous people," he said.
"There is still a lot of work to be done, but through this association with Deadly Choices and Kalwun, there is a wonderful opportunity to continue the great work of Deadly Choices.
"I encourage all Indigenous people to get their 715 health checks and they'll walk away with a co-branded Titans and Deadly Choices shirt, but it also sends a message out that you genuinely care... for your colleagues, for your family and for your community."
The partnership between Kalwun Health Service, Deadly Choices and the Gold Coast Titans has played a key role in driving demand for preventative health care, contributing to an incredible 4000 percent increase in 715 health checks across South-East Queensland and leading to the expansion of Deadly Choices right across Queensland.
