25 in sight: Khan-Pereira's new goal after smashing club record

It's only taken 18 games in Alofiana Khan-Pereira's fledgling first grade career to already etch his name in the Titans' history books, surpassing David Fifita's previous record to have now scored the most tries in one season.

But upon a small celebration for that incredible achievement after crossing for his 18th four-pointer of 2023, the rookie sensation has quickly moved on to reaching an even bigger milestone.

"My goal is to get the top try scorer... that's definitely the target and hopefully I can even beat last year's record," he revealed.

That was a measly 25, set by Rabbitohs flyer Alex Johnston who was yet again in a rich vein of points-scoring form across his 23 appearances in the 2022 regular season to earn the Ken Irvine Medal - his third in as many years.

Khan-Pereira becomes a record holder

The magic quarter of a century number is also the same amount of four-pointers he scored last season in action for the Burleigh Bears across 19 matches - easily earning himself top try-scorer honours.

Whilst the Titans young gun's tally is only seven short of that figure with five games to play, he will have fend off talented Knights back Dominic Young who is leading the tally with 20 fanciful four-pointers and incumbent try-scoring king Johnston who is also tied with Khan-Pereira on 18.

Not since 2019 has a rookie won the prestigious honour - that season seeing Maika Sivo debut for Parramatta and go on to score 20 in his maiden year, only one shy of the all-time first-timer record of 21 set by Israel Folau in 2007.

'Top try-scorer is my goal': Khan-Pereira

Even if the 21-year-old falls short of his ambitious goal, he will be still immensely proud of his first season as Titan #176 given he had absolutely no presumptions ahead of his debut campaign.

"I never really expected anything this year to be honest," Khan-Pereira said.

"Everything has kind of hit me in the face and it's been a lot to take in, but I'm just trying to take each week at a time and put my best foot forward every game."

That includes an almighty task up against ultra-talented winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak in Friday night's match against the Warriors - the New Zealand finisher also in the top 10 try-scorers with 16 four-pointers.

"I'm expecting a tough game this week, especially having to mark up against Dallin as my opposition," Khan-Pereira said.

"He's one of the greatest wingers [in the competition] too, so I'm very nervous and know it's going to be a really tough game.

"He's a freak and doing great at the Warriors this season."
