Key three: Titans show fight as Weaver impresses on debut

The Gold Coast Titans showed plenty of fight, but were outrun in the final 10 minutes as the Penrith Panthers flexed their muscle to win 40-14 at Cbus Super Stadium.

Here are the key talking points from the Round 25 clash:

Titans show grit, but Penrith prove their class

The Titans put it all on the line in an attempt to take down the defending premiers, but the competition frontrunners proved their class in their 40-14 showing, notching up their eighth straight win in their charge to the finals.

Showing immense courage and grit to put it to the Panthers, including clawing back a 22-6 lead to get within only eight points, two serious injuries proved costly for the home side, forcing a number of positional reshuffles to an already depleted 17.

The back-to-back premiers won most of the key statistical match-ups with Dylan Edwards the star of the show with the No. 1 jersey on his back, scoring two tries, breaking 10 tackles and running for 303 metres.

Former Titan Tyrone Peachey was no slouch either in the contest, scoring a try and running 174 metres in the contest, but the Titans weren't disgraced despite the scoreline, with a number of players impressing.

This included starting forwards Moeaki Fotuaika and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui - both running over 150 metres; alongside AJ Brimson, halves Jayden Campbell and Tom Weaver and utility Kruise Leeming.

Injury carnage as Titans casualty ward grows

The Gold Coast’s injury woes continued in Round 25 with Phil Sami and Jayden Campbell both forced to the sidelines with limb injuries in a tough night for the Titans back seven.

Sami was interchanged at half-time with a toe injury, forcing a reshuffle with Aaron Schoupp moving to the wing and Jacob Alick coming on to fill the centre position.

Meanwhile, there is concerns for Jayden Campbell around the severity of his knee injury sustained in the 58th minute, leaving the field grimacing with pain despite showing extreme tenacity to try and continue playing.

Young Weaver shows bright future from the get-go

Exciting debutant Tom Weaver wasted no time in showing why he deserves to be in the NRL arena, combining with his former Tweed Seagulls teammate Klese Haas to deliver the Titans’ first points in only the second minute of the game.

Delivering a short pass to the edge forward to ran 30 metres to score, it was the first of many deft touches in his first game wearing the No. 7.

Debutant Weaver is made of tough stuff

He was also brave in defence, forced to make 18 tackles as the Penrith forwards went looking for the 20-year-old in his maiden appearance - but the tenacious half kept them at bay in a solid first-up performance.
