'Anyone can beat anyone': Murphy not taking Tigers lightly despite favouritism

Karyn Murphy knows the dangerous of a sleeping giant, expecting the Wests Tigers to be hungry to bounce back when they face her side at Cbus Super Stadium on Saturday.

A disastrous opening half in the visitors' first game of the season against the Raiders saw the biggest margin of the weekend notched up, but they clicked into gear in the second 35 to slow the onslaught for a final 32-12 result, and next face the Gold Coast who are full of confidence from their 18-10 win against the Dragons in Wollongong.

But whilst the Titans are coming off a solid start to their new campaign, Murphy is wary of the potential of their upcoming opponents, knowing the level of the competition has been raised further in 2024, including the equalisation of teams and their ability to win.

"The Tigers came back in their second half, it was just that first 20 minutes in Round 1 that cost them the game. We certainly aren't taking them lightly and won't take any team lightly in this competition," she said.

"Anyone can beat anyone... that's the beauty of NRLW at the moment. I think any team can beat any team on their day.

"They'll be coming up for a bounce back after Round 1 so we're definitely not taking those girls lightly at all."

Round 1 highlights: Dragons v Titans

Cautious of complacency in what the punters are deeming to be a very lopsided battle, the Titans coach just has to refer her side back to the high stakes of last year's final round to emphasis the importance of every game, especially those on home soil.

"We know where the competition is at... you just have to look at last year," Murphy said.

"We only lost two games but were fighting in the last round for a final four spot because there is only four spots.

"We know we don't have that luxury of losing games, so it's easy for us to prepare each week and know we have to be on."

Further fuelling the desire for the Gold Coast to claim victory against the Tigers this weekend is the opportunity to play in front of a sold-out Cbus Super Stadium with full house sign officially put up on Wednesday afternoon.

Eyeing off breaking the club record for the highest attended NRLW game, the incredible support comes after the Titans' performance in front of a strong crowd in Wollongong last week.

"It's so exciting. Our first game at home and to have a potential full house for the girls... hopefully that crowd comes early and supports the girls," Murphy said.

"Every round now is creating history and breaking records. It's so exciting for the girls and they deserve that.

"To see the crowd come out in what was some windy conditions down in Wollongong on Sunday and the noise they made, it was so good the girls to play in front.

"Hopefully we can get the crowd out early again this weekend to watch our girls run out and break another record this Saturday afternoon."
