Grey not looking back after mid-year switch earns rookie honours

Rugby Sevens convert Georgia Grey hasn't looked back since making the switch to the 13-player game, claiming the Titans' rookie of the year honours ahead of five other debutants in the mix in 2024.

Her standout season with the Bond University Bull Sharks caught the attention of Titans coach Karyn Murphy, who brought the young gun into the Gold Coast’s top 24 with Grey earning her NRLW debut in Round 2 and impressing in her maiden season.

The 20-year-old continued to show growth and development each game to notch up eight appearances and acknowledged her Titans teammates for their unwavering support throughout her debut campaign.

"It's an incredible honour to receive this award and I've had a massive year of learning coming straight in from playing 7s and 15s," Grey told titans.com.au.

"Learning the sport in pre-season and then being able to debut in Round 2 was pretty incredible and I've had such a great bunch of girls to do it with.

"It's such a supportive club and the girls are always there to answer my silly questions about the game but I've loved every moment of the season."

Rewarded for her strong pre-season, Grey was handed her first crack at the vacant No. 2 jersey back in July when rugby league pioneer Karina Brown was ruled out with a calf injury.

The star rookie hasn’t looked back since, notching two tries and averaging 83 run metres per game – playing a key role in supporting her team through a challenging season marked by injuries.

Grey acknowledged Brown and centre Niall Williams-Guthrie for their guidance during her switch from union to league – with the young gun looking forward to training hard in the off-season in preparation for 2025.

"Being in the edge on the wing, you really want to trust your inside centres and to play alongside Niall this season has been an incredible experience," she said.

"Also, having the opportunity to learn from Goose, who is a true G.O.A.T in the game and possesses so much experience has been truly inspiring; there's no one better to learn from than the best in the league.

"We'll look at the areas we can work on, focus on training hard and build upon what we have done well across this season.

"We were up and down all year but there were good moments in the game and we're so strong as a team with really great club culture."
