Fairytale finish on horizon for NRLW Titan #1

Karina Brown’s remarkable journey in rugby league continues to inspire, with the recently-retired flyer nominated for the Champion of Sport at Saturday's Gold Coast Bulletin Women of the Year awards.

After closing the curtain on her stellar 14-year career at the end of 2024, Brown reflected on the significance of the nomination following an emotional final season with the Gold Coast Titans.

"As challenging as it was to be ruled out in Round 1 due to injury, having the opportunity to run out in the final round and say farewell to the game was incredibly special," she told titans.com.au.

"To then be nominated as a Champion of Sport alongside so many incredible nominees is truly an honour and I am deeply grateful for the recognition."

While the 35-year-old's career has been defined by her incredible achievements on the field — playing for the Jillaroos, representing Queensland and being a cornerstone of the Gold Coast Titans — her impact goes far beyond the try line.

"One of my proudest achievements was founding the Burleigh Bears Women’s Team in 2012 and seeing the pathways it has opened for junior and senior girls ever since," Brown said.

"Growing up, I didn’t have the chance to play when I was in school, so to now play a small part in creating opportunities for others is something I’m incredibly proud of."

After an inspiring career that has seen the gritty outside back earn the respect of her peers, coaches and community — Brown's final game for her NRLW career against the Raiders in Round 9 was an emotional milestone.

"I get goosebumps just thinking about it — the Titans, my club, my teammates and the staff made that week unforgettable," she said.

"It all began with the captain's run where I was surrounded by my family, the people who’ve supported me through every step of my career.

"Then, to finish the game and be celebrated by both my teammates and the opposition was a moment I will carry with me forever."

A special haka for NRLW stalwart Karina Brown

Leaving behind a legacy of opening doors for others — especially young girls dreaming of a career in rugby league — Brown is eager to continue shaping the future of women’s sport, both on the Gold Coast and beyond.

"Being part of the Jillaroos allowed me to learn about the rich history of women’s rugby league and the incredible contributions of those who came before me," she said.

"I’ve always wanted to build on their legacy and ensure every young girl has the chance to play rugby league — whether for fun or as a full-time elite athlete in the NRLW.

"I'm so thankful to everyone who's been a part of my journey and I'm excited to continue building pathways and creating new opportunities for the next generation."
