The Gold Coast Titans join the wider rugby league community in sharing its condolences on the passing of Gold Coast Rugby League referee, Shawn McQuillan.

McQuillan was laid to rest today after he tragically passed away after suffering a medical episode while officiating a trial match at Bycroft Oval, Runaway Bay, on Saturday, March 22.

Shawn collapsed during the game between Southport Tigers and Runaway Bay, prompting an urgent response from paramedics. Four ambulances were called to the scene, and he was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a life-threatening condition.

Sadly, he did not recover.

A dedicated member of the Gold Coast Rugby League Referee Association (GCRLRA) for 14 years, Shawn played a vital role in developing and supporting referees at all levels of the game.

Over the past two years he served as the GCRLRA appointments officer for the Kinetic Titans Schools League, ensuring young referees were given opportunities to grow in the game.

His commitment extended beyond scheduling, as he regularly attended Schools League finals to coach and mentor the next generation of officials.

Shawn’s passion for the game, his professionalism, and his dedication to mentoring young referees mean he will be deeply missed by his colleagues and the wider rugby league community.

Shawn is survived by his partner, Tahlia.

A GoFundMe page has been established to support Shawn's family here.
